Consent handling for newborns

Introduction

This is a web-based solution designed to streamline the process of obtaining consent from parents for newborn baby blood samples for testing diseases. The platform consists of a Progressive Web App (PWA) that runs on tablets, enabling parents and medical staff to digitally sign the consent form within the hospital setting. Additionally, a management dashboard allows authorized roles to access patient information and monitor consent status. Leveraging modern technologies such as Node.js, Express, Mongo, React, Redux Toolkit, Bootstrap, and DocuSign integration, this case study explores the development and implementation of the platform, highlighting its benefits in terms of efficiency, privacy, and improved patient experience.

Objectives

  1. Simplify the process of obtaining consent from parents for newborn baby blood testing, eliminating paper-based forms and manual workflows.
  2. Ensure the privacy and security of patient data through encryption and adherence to relevant healthcare regulations.
  3. Provide a user-friendly PWA for parents and medical staff to digitally sign the consent form in the hospital.
  4. Enable authorized users to monitor and manage consent status through a comprehensive management dashboard.
  5. Integrate with DocuSign for secure and legally binding digital signatures.

Development Process

  1. Planning and Requirements Gathering:

    • Conducted research to understand the existing consent management process and identified pain points.
    • Collaborated with healthcare professionals to define requirements and desired functionalities of the platform.
    • Created user stories and wireframes to guide the development process.
  2. Architecture and Technology Stack Selection:

    • Chose Node.js and Express as the backend framework to handle server-side logic and API integration.
    • Selected React with Redux Toolkit for the frontend, enabling efficient state management and responsive user interfaces.
    • Designed a secure and scalable database schema using MongoDB to store patient information and medical documents.
    • Chose Bootstrap for responsive and mobile-friendly UI components, ensuring seamless usability across devices.
    • Investigated DocuSign documentation to understand how it works and how to us it for secure and legally binding digital signatures.
  3. Progressive Web App (PWA) Development

    • Built a PWA optimized for tablets, ensuring a smooth user experience for parents and medical staff.
    • Implemented user authentication and authorization mechanisms to ensure secure access to the consent form.
    • Developed a user-friendly interface that guides parents through the consent process, providing necessary information and clarifications.
    • Enabled real-time data synchronization between the PWA and the backend, ensuring accurate consent status updates.
  4. Management Dashboard:

    • Created a comprehensive management dashboard accessible to authorized roles.
    • Implemented role-based access control to ensure appropriate access levels and data confidentiality.
    • Integrated data tables and filtering capabilities, enabling efficient monitoring and search of patient records.
    • Developed features for managing consent status, generating reports, and exporting data for further analysis.
  5. Security and Compliance:

    • Implemented robust security measures to protect patient data, including encryption at rest and in transit.
    • Ensured compliance with relevant healthcare regulations (e.g., HIPAA) for data privacy and security.
    • Conducted thorough testing and vulnerability assessments to identify and address potential security risks.
  6. Agile Ways of Working:

    • Adopted Agile methodologies, such as Scrum, to enable iterative development and continuous improvement.
    • Implemented regular sprints or iterations to deliver incremental updates and gather feedback from users.
    • Engaged in collaborative teamwork with client, with frequent communication and adaptive planning.

Conclusion

This project revolutionizes the process of obtaining consent for newborn baby blood testing, eliminating cumbersome paperwork and enhancing efficiency within healthcare institutions. By leveraging a modern tech stack, the platform provides a user-friendly experience for parents and medical staff, streamlining the consent process. Additionally, the management dashboard empowers authorized roles to monitor and manage consent status effectively. With its focus on privacy, security, and improved patient experience, the platform sets a new standard for digital consent management in healthcare settings.
